Here's how vacuum distillation fits into the tin and lead processes:

  1. Lowering the Boiling Point: By creating a vacuum, the boiling point of a substance decreases. This principle is useful for metals refining. In a reduced pressure environment, metals will vaporize at much lower temperatures than they would at atmospheric pressure.

  2. Separation Based on Boiling Points: In a vacuum, metals can be separated based on their boiling points. For example, the boiling points of lead, tin, and antimony are different. By slowly increasing the temperature and controlling the pressure, one can selectively vaporize one metal at a time and then condense it separately.

  3. Reducing Oxidation: Operating under a vacuum can help reduce the chance of oxidation since the process typically excludes air. This is especially important for metals that are easily oxidizable.

Our VDUs are often used in combination with impurity removal kettles in the refining process. Please ask us about our live on-site trials.
